How do you escape from the norm?

Posted on January 30, 2023 by Midlife Mad

Funny question isn’t it, how do you escape from the norm?

What is the norm anyway!?!

For me, my norm is time at work or time doing family things at home (which will form parts of future posts I’m sure).

So as a busy full time worker who also values family time how do you have an escape and make some time for yourself?

For me it fits into a couple of main areas which I do regularly.

  1. Early morning visits to the gym (I will write plenty about this elsewhere as I am very focused on goals I will achieve there) – https://midlifemad.com/fitness/some-of-my-workouts/
  2. Listening to music (headphones on) when everyone else is asleep in bed) and I’ve already started to write about the music I like – https://midlifemad.com/about-me/why-do-i-like-metal-music/

So what else could I do instead?

People have suggested to me that meditation is very worthwhile, other than a few breathing exercises via my Fitbit app I haven’t ever tried this.

Where do you start? What do you do?

I’ve found the best place to start was YouTube,

Lots of free videos to watch, all packed with information and guide you through what to do! Just search for beginners meditation on YouTube and away you go. It hasn’t really proved to be my thing yet, but I’m going to keep trying it and see how I can adapt to different methods overtime. I’ll look forward to documenting it as I go forwards!

Another way I’ve found to escape is just using different apps on the phone for brain training and doing a few puzzles. One app called Elevate – free version in use, don’t really fancy forking out for it at present. I get a few levels a day to test myself.
Also sudoku based block games (very Tetris like) I have found to be good as well. I like the challenge of beating an old score or trying to solve the specific puzzles they have on the apps.
When I’ve finished with any of those apps I do always feel clear of mind and like I have escaped. Not always ideal with the extra screen time, but it works for me!

I feel this is a topic that will be revisited a few times in the future as I continue to self develop and improve myself & my ways!
